Learn how to use color and texture in the garden. The shade garden should be a palette where the gardener can provide their artistic talents to make it unique, to make it theirs and make it useful. Houseplants Growing plants indoors expands the range of plants that can be enjoyed. Houseplants bring the cycles of nature indoors. What are the care requirements and needs of your houseplants? Learn the proper care and how to propagate for more plants. English Cottage Style Gardening with English Roses Learn How to introduce the romantic old fashioned style of English Cottage Gardens into the landscape using English roses as the focal point. Successfully growing English Roses in the Midwest will be a key topic. Seed Starting/Plant Propagation Save money, preserve and continue those special plants. Grow plants that may not always be available at area nurseries. The methods are easy and fun. This class includes hands on experience. We will start at least 6 Geraniums and 6 other plants. Keeping a Garden Journal Students will learn the basics of journaling and reasons for keeping a garden journal. As a bonus they will be given a composition notebook to use as a garden journal. Students need to bring scissors and glue stick to class. Materials fee $3.00 Ornamental Grasses &Companion Plants The subtle colors and feathery heads of ornamental grasses add interest and variety to the garden and landscape. Learn how to grow and maintain grasses and companion plants suitable to this area. The cost to attend is $5 per person, per program and includes refreshments. To register call ISU Scott County Extension 563-359-7577 The Henry County Master Gardeners are sponsoring a symposium, "Gardening Today", Saturday February 17, 2007. There will be 3 outstanding morning speakers, Jim Nau of Ball Seed Company, Lee Zeike Lee and Lindsay Lee of Willoglen Nursery in Decorah. There will be 6"break out sessions" in the afternoon with topics including water gardening, landscaping techniques, kids in the garden, heirloom flowers, the berry patch, and the grape escape. Lunch is included. Cost is $20.00 (preregistered) or $25.00 after 2-12-07. For more information and registration form contact: Henry County Extension Office IOWA NURSERY AND LANDSCAPE ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE The Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association is opening up one day of our conference and trade show to the public! This has never happened in the long history of INLA and we are excited about sharing this wonderful event with a larger audience. The conference theme this year is “It’s a Jungle Out There” and promises to be both an educational and fun event. The Program Committee has arranged an interesting agenda for both consumers and professionals on Friday. Roy Diblik from Northwind Perennial Farm in Wisconsin will speak on Sustainable Landscaping. Roy is a co-founder of Northwind Farm and a leading regional expert in the field of perennial garden design. Northwind Farm’s website is www.northwindperennialfarm.com Jim Patchett, founder of Conservation Design Forum will discuss landscape and water management strategies that promote healthy, cost effective sustainable solutions. Conservation Design Forum’s website address is www.cdfinc.com In addition, ISU Extension will present the “Top Ten Things Every Homeowner Should Know About Their Landscape.” Plus, you will get to walk the exhibit floor, see new products and speak with vendors eager to answer your questions. Mark your calendars for Friday, January 26, 2007. The event is held at the Polk County Convention Complex. Sessions start at 8:30am. Registration begins at 7:30am. ISU Master Gardeners can register for the conference and trade show at a special price of $75.00.
