Announcements and news for ISU Extension staff, Master Gardeners, and faculty IN THIS ISSUE ISU Extension - Allamakee County will have a Pruning and Grafting Workshop on Saturday March 31st at Peake Orchards near Waukon. From 10 AM until noon, Extension horticulturist, Bob Hauer, will demonstrate pruning and training trees. At 1PM, Dr. Patrick O’Malley ISU Extension field specialist, will demonstrate and help participants graft two trees to take home. The registration fee is $5 for the morning session and $30 for the grafting session in the afternoon. People who sign up for grafting may attend the morning program for free. The Fort Dodge Area Gardeners’ 29th Annual Garden Seminar will be held Saturday, March 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Triton Inn on the Iowa Central Community College campus. This year’s programs include “Organic Gardening: Tips & Techniques” by Master Gardener Steve Wright, “Garden Ornaments” by Jane Hogue of the Prairie Pedlar in Odebolt, and the “Emerald Ash Borer” by Jim Patton, Webster Co. Extension Education Director. Learn everything you need to know to be successful with “Organic Gardening.” Steve Wright will share tips and "tricks of the trade" on getting started, building and maintaining rich soil quality, managing pests & diseases, choosing plants for an organic garden, xeriscape techniques, and use of organic fertilizers and mulches. “Garden Ornaments” proves that found objects and art can greatly complement the beauty of your garden. Jane Hogue uses ideas from her 75 theme gardens to give a fresh look at decorating outdoors with ideas that are achievable, affordable, charming, and fun. The “Emerald Ash Borer”, a new exotic insect from Asia has become established in the midwestern United States. Although the insect is not currently found in Iowa, Jim Patton will explain the potential impact of this new pest and the practices needed to limit the impact from the borers’ invasion. A major effort to emphasize tree planting in Webster County in the spring of 2007 will be described, including ideas for participation and support. The seminar is free and open to the public. Door prizes will be furnished by area businesses. Refreshments will be served. ISU Scott County Extension is offering a Grafting Workshop on Friday March 30th from 7:00-9:00 PM at the ISU Scott County Extension office. Dr Patrick O’Malley, ISU Extension field specialist, will demonstrate a “whip and tongue graft” and help participants graft two trees of their own to take home. For the registration fee of $25.00 each participant gets two rootstocks. A couple may register together for $35.00 and get two rootstocks to share between them. Anyone can purchase additional rootstock for $5.00 each.
