Announcements and news for ISU Extension staff, Master Gardeners, and faculty IN THIS ISSUE
NATIVE PLANTS WORKSHOP JUNE 15 Come one come all June 15 to the native plants workshop located at the Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge. Enjoy programs in the morning from Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge Research Biologist Pauline Drobney and Urban Conservationist Jennifer Welch. There will also be a guided tour of the Refuge in the afternoon. Lunch will be catered by BT-BAR-B-QUE. Pauline will give an overview of the botany of plants that are native to Iowa with a focus on learning how to identify plants used in tallgrass prairie and savanna sites. As a research biologist at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, Pauline Drobney directs and develops programs showcasing tallgrass prairie and savanna research and management. She has a master's degree in biology and bachelor's degrees in biology and art from the University of Northern Iowa. Jennifer will show the importance of incorporating native plants into the urban landscape in ways that help protect water quality and beautify our communities. Native plants will be shown in gardens, landscaping, rain gardens, and as turfgrass to highlight the ways they can work to improve urban areas. Jennifer Welch is an urban conservationist with Urban Resources & Borderland Alliance Network (URBAN), serving four Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD). The mission of URBAN is to improve water quality and natural resource conservation in urban and developing areas by providing education, information and technical assistance to governmental units, the development community and citizens in central Iowa. She also is co-founder of the Iowa Storm Water Education Program (ISWEP) a membership organization that provides storm water educational resources and leadership to cities across Iowa. Jennifer is a certified professional in erosion and sediment control (CPESC). She has an undergraduate degree in agronomy and a graduate degree in water resources from Iowa State University. Please keep this email message handy to share with clients that visit your office inquiring about the Master Gardener program. Fall Semester, 2007 Adair/Union Spring Semester, 2008 Allamakee INTERNATIONAL MASTER GARDENER CONFERENCE WRAP UP Wow! Arkansas raised the bar for future International Master Gardener Conferences. There were approximately 1200 attendees of which 11 represented the Iowa Master Gardener Program. Some of the highlights included a keynote program from P. Allen Smith, excellent tours, great workshops, around 60 vendors, and an absolutely incredible evening event entitled, 'Taste of Arkansas' which included many different types of food to try and trips to the Clinton Presidential Library and the old Statehouse. The Iowa Master Gardener website will have pictures from the event soon. The next International Master Gardener Conference will be held in Las Vegas March of 2009. Muscatine County Master Gardeners will host a “Field & Flower Day”, Saturday, June 23, 9 am-3 pm, 2402 Isett Avenue, Muscatine. Presentations will be held throughout the day: 10:00 am - Perennials by Janet Freeborn, Horticulture Program Director at Muscatine Community College; 11:00 am - Rain Gardens by Vern Ohlendorf, Master Gardener; 1:00 pm – Trees & Conifers by Charles Rickey, Master Gardener; 2:00 pm – Hardy Roses by Sandra Wales, Master Gardener. A plant sale, bake sale, garden-theme yard sale and raffle will be held. POLK COUNTY MASTER GARDENER ROAD TRIP 2007 EDITION Polk County Master Gardener’s are on the road again!! August 24 - 26, 2007 is the date of the Polk County Master Gardener Garden Trip. We will be traveling to Rockford, Illinois to visit the Klehm Arboretum and Anderson Japanese Gardens. Klehm Arboretum has an assortment of plant life unlike any other natural area in the United States. Anderson Japanese Gardens is considered one of the finest examples of Japanese gardens outside of Japan. There are two distinct gardens in this 14 acre oasis. The trip will also include stops at a winery, a garden center and the rare opportunity to visit fabulous home gardens. Cost of the trip is based on number of people per room and includes full transportation by bus, two nights’ hotel with complimentary breakfast, lunch Friday, and dinners both Friday and Saturday evening, admission to all of the gardens, fun, good company and surprises. We will be staying both nights at the Hampton Inn in Rockford (615 Clark Drive). Reservations may be made by completing the registration form and submitting by mail with payment in full, bus (and so our tour) capacity is 55. Hurry before we sell out!
