PROJECT GREENHOUSE

My name is Shane Mairet and I am a junior at Iowa State University majoring in Horticulture. I have created a special project to further my experience growing and designing with woody and herbaceous plants and to help the Department of Horticulture. My reason for writing this letter is to ask for your help with this project.

Project Greenhouse will consist of designing a landscape from the plants and materials that you have donated and selling the plants from that design at Veishea. Veishea is one of Iowa State University’s oldest traditions with its’ name coming from the original colleges at the university, Veterinary medicine, Engineering, Industrial Science, Home Economics, and Agriculture. It is also one of the largest student run celebrations in the country. Thousands of people visit the Iowa State campus every year to share in the celebration and to learn more about the University. All of the money raised from Project Greenhouse will go to the Iowa State Department of Horticulture Greenhouse Fund. This fund will be used to build the new greenhouses that our department desperately needs.

Project Greenhouse is important because our current facilities are almost 100 years old. We need to keep our students up to date and be able to show them what they will use in the industry, and have facilities for housing and growing plants for our classes. The new facilities will be approximately 20,000 square feet of greenhouse space with a cost of approximately 6 million dollars.

For this project to become a success it will take help and commitment from everyone. With your help Iowa State will be able to better educate future master gardeners and the next generation of horticulturists. Your donation is 100% tax deductible and we will display you name at the entrance to the garden at Veishea. So please help yourselves and the Iowa State Horticulture Department by making a donation to Project Greenhouse today.

If you are interested in donating to Project Greenhouse or would like more information please contact me at smairet@iastate.edu or you can call me at (319) 931-3920. Any checks should be made out to the ISU Department of Horticulture. Thank you!

IOWA ARBORETUM FALL FEST

This year's Fall Fest is Saturday, September 22 and features a full schedule of events to help you welcome this season! Starting with an Ornamental Grass Sale and ending with a Wienie Roast, this day is sure to please.

Gather at the Arboretum at 9:00 a.m. for the Ornamental Grass Sale and you will see the best selection of hardy Ornamental Grasses in Iowa! Ornamental Grasses are becoming increasingly popular as gardeners begin to notice these outstanding plants, and this is the best time of the year to view them!

At 10:30 a.m., Dr. Lois Girton will present an informative program on growing Ornamental Grasses. Pick out your favorite Ornamental Grasses and attend this program to learn more about how to best care for your new plants. This is your opportunity to speak with an expert on growing Ornamental Grasses in Iowa! The program is free and open to the public.

Finish the day with our Fall Hike and Wienie Roast. The hike will depart at 3:00 pm to tour the grounds and enjoy our nice fall weather. A wienie roast and bon fire will be held after the hike. This gathering is pre-registration only with a cost of $10 for adults and $5 for children under ten.

Iowa Arboretum is located 2 ½ miles east and 2 miles south of Luther in Boone County.

ISHS 2007 HONOR AND MERIT AWARD NOMINATIONS

Our ISHS 2007 Honor and Merit Award nominations are due September 30th. If there is someone who has made great contributions to Iowa Horticulture, Education, or your Organization; there has never been a better time to nominate someone for the recognition they deserve. You may receive more information and look at the list of past recipients by going to the ISHS Awards and Winners link. Congratulations go out to our past 2006 award winners. Doug Struyk, J.D., (Merit Award), Barb Osborn (Honor Award), and Jeff Wendel, CGCS, Jerry Miller, Mike Bevins, and Barbara Sylvester for Presidential Awards.

Last year we combined our ISHS Annual Awards and Scholarship recognition program (and business meeting) with our ISHS Fall Affiliate Board Meeting during mid week. This combined meeting will continue at a date, time, and place in early November (mid week) that will be announced in the coming weeks. We understand how busy our ISHS representative’s schedules are today, so we want to avoid tying up a weekend when so many people have family, sports events, work, and other fall activities going on in these hectic times. We feel this is the best option for everyone involved. Last year’s event was well attended and we appreciated new Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey taking the time to address our associations.
